Frequently asked questions
What is a .pkpass file?
It’s the Apple Wallet pass format: a ZIP archive containing a pass.json with the data, the images (logo, icon, strip, background…), translations and a digital signature. Airlines, cinemas, concerts and shops use it for boarding passes, tickets, coupons and loyalty cards.
Is my pass uploaded to a server?
No. The file is unzipped and drawn in your own browser with JavaScript. It isn’t sent anywhere or stored.
Can I use the barcode shown here?
The barcode is generated from the pass content (QR, PDF417, Aztec or Code 128), so it can usually be scanned from the screen. Even so, for boarding or entering an event we recommend using the issuer’s official app or Apple Wallet.
Why does it look slightly different than on an iPhone?
Apple doesn’t publish the Wallet rendering engine or its typeface, so this viewer recreates the design following the public PassKit specification. Differences are usually minor (fonts, exact sizes and effects).
Is the pass signature checked?
The viewer checks that the hashes in manifest.json match the files, but it doesn’t validate Apple’s signing certificate.
