How to add a .pkpass file to Google Wallet

The short answer: Google Wallet can't open or import .pkpass files. They are different formats: a .pkpass file is signed with an Apple certificate, while Google Wallet passes are created by the issuer with Google's tools. Still, there are several ways to get the same result.

1. Look for an “Add to Google Wallet” button

This is the best option. Many airlines, cinemas and ticketing platforms offer both versions: check the email or the issuer's website for an “Add to Google Wallet” button next to the Apple Wallet one. An official pass updates itself if the gate, seat or time changes.

2. Create a pass from the barcode

In some countries Google Wallet lets you create a pass from a photo or screenshot of a barcode. To do it with a .pkpass file:

  1. Open the file in the PKPass viewer (see how to open a .pkpass file on Android).
  2. Take a screenshot where the barcode is clearly visible.
  3. In Google Wallet, tap “Add to Wallet” and look for the option to create a pass from a photo (usually under “Everything else”). Pick the screenshot.

The option's name and availability depend on your country and app version. Keep in mind this pass is a copy: it won't update if the issuer changes any detail.

3. Use an app that supports .pkpass

Some Google Play apps, such as Pass2U Wallet or WalletPasses, import .pkpass files and store them on your phone. It isn't Google Wallet, but you'll have your passes in one place.

4. Keep a screenshot

If you only need it once, the quickest way is to open the pass in the viewer and take a screenshot. For boarding or entering an event, check first whether the issuer accepts a barcode shown this way; the official app is always the safest option.

Got the file? Open it now in the viewer: it runs in your browser and the pass is never uploaded to a server.
